Dalton Knecht's time with the Los Angeles Lakers ended earlier this month after the team waived him. The former first-round pick has since joined the New York Knicks on a two-way contract and has had to wait for his first opportunity with his new team.

That chance came on Wednesday against the Chicago Bulls, and Knecht made the most of it. He scored 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds in 16 minutes as New York cruised to a 135-105 win.

The 24-year-old shot 4-of-6 from the field and made two 3-pointers. His first basket came on a powerful putback dunk, followed by a step-back 3-pointer in the final seconds of the first half.

Knecht, however, was ready when his number was called.

“No, I wasn’t surprised,” he said. “I just came in ready to go. The coaches said ‘you’re active’ — that just means be ready.”

Knicks coach Mike Brown praised Knecht's scoring ability, noting that he can do more than shoot from the perimeter. The coach also pointed to his midrange game, ability to attack the basket, and passing.

What made the performance more impressive was that Brown had not initially planned to play him.

“Yeah, just a gut feel,” Brown said. “He’s on my quote-unquote minute sheets. He’s down for zero minutes.”

Defense remains an area for improvement, but Brown liked how Knecht handled his opportunity.

After spending time with the Westchester Knicks, Knecht has given New York an encouraging first look at what he can offer. His debut also gives Brown another option to consider as the Knicks continue their season.
