Luka Doncic has been on an absolute tear to start the season, and Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick believes it is right up there with the best basketball he has seen from his superstar.
After Doncic dropped 40 points in Wednesday’s 116-103 win over the Sacramento Kings, Redick was asked whether this was the hottest he had seen Doncic over a two-week stretch.
“Probably this and March, the entire month of March last year,” Redick said, via Anthony Slater of ESPN. “I think that back-to-back we had where he closed out Houston for the second win in three nights, and then we went to Miami and got in at 4 a.m. and he had a 60 ball. That stretch was pretty magical from him. But he’s playing great right now and he’s doing a great job.”

Doncic poured in 60 points against the Miami Heat on March 19, and he finished the month with 600 total points, joining Michael Jordan as the only players to reach that mark in March. The Lakers went 15-2 during that stretch.
Redick also credited a change in how the Lakers are using their star.
“He’s doing a great job playing off the ball. We’re trying to set off-ball screens for him. Other guys are handling it,” Redick said. “I think some of that workload from bringing the ball up against pressure, every single possession, it’s just not there right now. And that’s very intentional on our part.”
Doncic’s latest outing showed exactly what Redick means. With the game tied at 46 in the second quarter, the Slovenian star ripped off 11 straight points.

And then he comes down and he makes three shots in a row that there’s five guys in the NBA can make. And all of a sudden the tie ballgame is a nine, 10-point lead,” Redick said. “The team feeds off that too, when he has it going like that.”
Doncic finished with 40 points, nine rebounds and seven assists, making him the first player in NBA history with six straight games of at least 35 points, five rebounds, five assists and five 3-pointers.
The Lakers, now 7-2, host the Portland Trail Blazers on Friday.
