The Los Angeles Kings turned up the heat at Madison Square Garden on Monday night, striking early and often to skate past the New York Rangers 6-3.

Taylor Ward opened the scoring just 1:15 into the contest, beating Rangers goaltender James Reimer on a breakaway after receiving a pass from Drew Doughty. Brandt Clarke doubled the advantage at 4:52, finishing a play involving Joel Armia and Scott Laughton.

Los Angeles scored twice within the opening 4:52, marking its fastest two-goal start to a road game since December 6, 2022, when it achieved the feat in 2:15 against the Ottawa Senators. The Kings also scored on their first two shots for the first time since February 7, 2021, versus the Vegas Golden Knights.

JT Miller reduced New York's deficit at 13:01, but Doughty restored the Kings' two-goal cushion with a point shot at 17:32. Los Angeles finished the opening period with a 3-1 lead, scoring three times on eight shots. Reimer was subsequently replaced after allowing three goals on eight attempts in his Rangers debut.

The Kings extended their advantage early in the second period when Artemi Panarin scored on the power play 90 seconds after entering the frame. Panarin, who also recorded an assist, reached seven goals for the season. Mikey Anderson made it 5-1 at 6:54 before Adam Fox answered for New York with a power-play goal at 13:05. Fox scored in his 500th NHL game, netting his first goal of the season.

Tye Kartye brought the Rangers within two at 16:08 of the third period with a six-on-five goal. However, Joel Edmundson put the result beyond doubt at 16:37, converting into an empty net for his first goal of the campaign.

Although both teams generated 26 shots, Los Angeles capitalized on its opportunities more effectively, finding the net five times on 20 even-strength attempts, compared with New York's two goals on 25 shots. The Rangers also lost their third consecutive game and suffered their first home defeat of the season after opening 6-0-0 at Madison Square Garden.

Meanwhile, the victory improved the Kings to 3-1-0 on their five-game road trip, which concludes Tuesday against the Chicago Blackhawks. Los Angeles entered the matchup after going winless through its first six games of the season and had now won three of its previous four contests, all away from home.
