Despite their recent stumble in Week 7, the San Francisco 49ers are sitting pretty this season. They enter their bye week in Week 8 with a 6-1 record, just behind the Minnesota Vikings for the best record in the NFC. Despite their recent injury troubles, the Niners are still chugging along and decimating almost everyone that crosses their path.

That doesn't mean that the 49ers are perfect. Even when they're fully healthy and free from the curse of the substation, there's still a few areas on the roster that need to be addressed. With the trade deadline fast approaching, let's look at what trade the 49ers need to during their bye week to further bolster their chances of hoisting the Lombardi Trophy this season.

49ers need to trade for DeForest Buckner, not a wide receiver

A fan's first idea for a 49ers deal might be to trade for a wide receiver. After all, the 49ers are already down two of their best wide receivers this season with Ricky Pearsall and De'Zhaun Stribling both out for the year. Other wide receivers like DeMarcus Robinson, Christian Kirk, Mike Evans, and Deebo Samuel are also dealing with their own injuries. After their offensive struggles against Atlanta, the average 49er fan might be inclined to trade for another wide-out.

However, the bye week is an extra week for the last four receivers I mentioned to get healthy. Kirk is already making his way back, while Evans and Samuel are on the mend. Robinson still has a ways to go, but it's fair to assume that the 49ers will get healthier in that department. Trading for another wide receiver might create an unnecessary logjam instead of helping them compete.

Instead, we turn our attention toward the 49ers' defense. San Francisco's defense has been pretty good this season, but there's a glaring hole in the trenches. The 49ers struggled to generate pressure against the Falcons last week. Michael Penix Jr. was pressured in just three of his 34 dropbacks in Week 7, a truly abysmal number. Part of it is due to the absence of Nick Bosa, the star pass-rusher who's dealing with a calf strain since the start of the season.

Even with Bosa in tow, the 49ers' defensive line still looks underwhelming. We've seen what a good interior defensive line does to a defense: it just completely unlocks the rest of the team's playmakers. Because of that, San Francisco needs to look at trading for a player who they're already familiar with: former Niner DeForest Buckner.

Buckner was with the 49ers from 2016-2019 before he was traded during the 2020 season. With the Indianapolis Colts, Buckner blossomed into one of the most underrated defensive players in the league. Unfortunately, Buckner's game has not translated to wins for Indy, leading to frustration from his side. Buckner's talents would be better utilized in San Francisco, where he'll immediately turn a good defense into an even better one this season.

The 49ers might pay a hefty price for Buckner, especially as they face stiff competition in the trade market. That shouldn't matter to John Lynch and the front office. They're reportedly committed to being buyers this offseason, and they need to capitalize on the hot start they've found themselves in. Reuniting their former defensive star with their current superstars should do wonders for this defense.

San Francisco still has a murderer's row of opponents they'll face throughout the year. Aside from their matchups against their division rivals, they'll take on the Vikings, Chiefs, Cowboys, and Raiders, among other teams. All of these teams have offenses that can capitalize on their opponent's weaknesses.
