The Seattle Mariners kept their playoff hopes alive Wednesday night, rallying for a dramatic 6-5, 10-inning comeback over the Houston Astros at T-Mobile Park thanks to Josh Naylor's RBI single that drove Randy Arozarena in for the winning run.

The loss left Houston at 78-80, tied with the Texas Rangers for first place in the AL West with four games remaining. The Astros own the head-to-head tiebreaker over Texas, meaning Houston still control its own destiny. Meanwhile, Seattle improved to 74-84 and remained four games behind with four contests left.

The Astros appeared to have regained the advantage when Yainer Diaz's RBI triple brought home automatic runner Yordan Alvarez in the 10th. Josh Hader then returned for his second inning of work after throwing 19 pitches in the ninth.

However, Hader couldn't close out the game. He issued three walks to four batters in the 10th, including Julio Rodriguez with the bases loaded. Rodriguez's full-count walk forced home JP Crawford to level the score at 5-5 before Naylor sent the next pitch into right-center, allowing Arozarena to cross the plate for his third run of the night.

Hader finished with 44 pitches, tying the fifth-highest mark of his career and his most since Aug. 9, 2019, when he was with the Milwaukee Brewers. The Mariners' hitters fouled off 11 of his pitches and swung through only five.

Houston had built a 4-0 advantage in the third inning, with Jose Altuve producing an RBI single, Alvarez adding an RBI double and Diaz hitting a two-run homer. Seattle answered with three runs in the bottom half, including two on Dominic Canzone's double, before Canzone's fifth-inning RBI single brought Arozarena home to make it 4-4.

Alvarez went 2-for-4 and raised his AL-leading batting average to .316. He remains tied with Junior Caminero and Pete Alonso for the home run lead at 41 while sitting second in RBIs with 102.

Cooper Criswell earned the win after pitching the 10th, while Hader took the loss.

The Mariners will turn to Bryan Woo (12-9, 3.92 ERA) on Thursday for the opener of their season-ending four-game series against the Los Angeles Angels. Meanwhile, the Astros will send right-hander Peter Lambert (8-10, 3.70 ERA) to start the first game of a four-game set versus the Athletics.
