A happy Joel Embiid is the best Joel Embiid.
Embiid was in a jovial mood during the Philadelphia 76ers' Media Day on Monday, as he talked about various topics heading into his 11th season.
The former MVP will be in a very different situation, with the arrivals of LeBron James and Jaylen Brown. He stayed mum during the height of the tug-of-war for James, and he maintained that he did not try to entice the four-time MVP to sign with the 76ers, as reported by PhillyVoice's Adam Aaronson.
“Embiid says he had a great summer with his family and was glad to not have an injury to worry about. He smirks after saying he didn't talk to or recruit LeBron James,” wrote Aaronson.
Fans are hoping that the 32-year-old Embiid will stay healthy. He, however, claimed that he basically chilled in the offseason, even though he visibly improved his overall physique.
“Embiid smirks as he says he didn't do any work on his body this summer and ‘gained a lot of weight.' He is in a joking mood today,” noted Aaronson.
Article Continues BelowHe, however, turned serious when asked about acquiring Brown in a trade with the Boston Celtics. Embiid and Brown had intense battles due to the long-standing rivalry between the 76ers and the Celtics. Now, they are on the same side.
“Embiid says what Brown brings on both ends of the floor is ‘hard to find in the league,' combined with ‘everything else he does on and off the floor,'” shared Aaronson.
Embiid has worked out with James, Brown, and Tyrese Maxey ahead of training camp, showing their willingness to get a head start in building rapport and forming their chemistry.
Many are expecting the 76ers to rule the Eastern Conference. If Embiid can avoid injuries and consistently dominate on both ends, it is safe to assume that opponents will not be in a jovial mood in the upcoming season.
