Zion Williamson entered the NBA as one of the most hyped-up prospects in history. He looked like a physical freak of nature back during his time in Duke, as he possessed incredible leaping ability and was unstoppable going to the rim due to his grown-man strength. The New Orleans Pelicans fell in love with him and selected him with the first overall pick of the 2019 NBA Draft as a result.
Williamson was supposed to carry the torch from Anthony Davis and lead the Pelicans' young core into title contention. However, Williamson, due to a combination of injury factors and off-court troubles, simply hasn't been able to fulfill his potential.
He is now entering the eighth season of his NBA career, and he's yet to play in a single playoff game. Now 26 years of age, Williamson, despite being a quality player, has now become a cautionary tale for unfulfilled potential. And even Williamson knows that he's fallen way short of the expectations placed upon him when he entered the league.
“I'm not where I want to be. I'm just not where I need to be and I'm not where I want to be,” Williamson said during media day on Monday, via Pelicans Film Room on X.

Williamson has faced a plethora of lower-body injuries throughout his career, as he simply hasn't been able to shake the fitness concerns he's experienced since the Pelicans drafted him. He's played in over 60 games in just three of his eight seasons in the NBA, and his stock continues to dip.
In fact, Williamson's name has been thrown around in trade rumors, suggesting that his time with the Pelicans may be on the verge of ending. He has two years left on his contract, and his lasting legacy in New Orleans remains his injury-proneness.
There is no denying Williamson's talent. But can he put together a season in which everything works out for him, health and performance-wise, even as the Pelicans roster around him continues to change?
