Jerry Jones: We're optimistic about team, I'd "work to improve it in a minute financially"

When the Cowboys restructured contracts to create cap space ahead of the regular season, Jerry Jones said that it gave the team “really viable serious room” to make a trade to help out the roster.

The Cowboys owner made similar gestures about the team’s willingness to make moves throughout the offseason and the topic has remained on his mind through the first couple of weeks of the regular season. After Sunday’s win over the Commanders, Jones told reporters that “there is nothing more dangerous than an old man with money” and he said on 105.3 The Fan on Tuesday that his comments were made in the context of the Cowboys.

“Very much, very much,” Jones said, via the team’s website. “I wouldn’t under no circumstance, with that audience, be referring to anything other than a football context. I said it out of context, but I’m glad I said it. We were just feeling so good about our win that we were feeling our oats. We say this just right, don’t tamper. My point is, it’s good. We have the makings of a team here that I’m that optimistic about. I’d work to improve it in a minute financially.”

Defense has long been seen as the area that the Cowboys would target in any move and the first two weeks have done nothing to quiet thoughts that there’s room for improvement on that front. It remains to be seen what kind of deals might be available to them, but that picture should get clearer as the trade deadline gets closer.
