The Jacksonville Jaguars picked up a huge win in Week 5. Jacksonville survived against Philadelphia thanks to a game-winning field goal by Cam Little on the final play of the game. But a series of uncharacteristic errors almost cost the Jaguars the game.
Jaguars head coach Liam Coen is taking full responsibility for his team's rash of delay of game penalties in Week 5, per ESPN's Michael DiRocco. He reportedly told players that those penalties were “directly on me” citing the loud atmosphere at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Coen also said that he plans to get play calls in quicker in Week 6. He may even shorten some of the names to ensure the same issue does not happen again.
“That was probably one of the louder atmospheres I've been in a while,” Coen said on Wednesday. “Especially in those critical moments to where, ‘Hey guys, I can help you out with my playcall.' Maybe shorten it up, trim the verbiage or call something a little bit more simplified down there where it was in that end zone specifically that got loud and some of those critical downs.”
Jacksonville endured three delay of game penalties against Philadelphia. That is something unusual for a disciplined Jaguars squad. According to ESPN Research, Jacksonville had not had more than one delay of game penalty in a game during the Coen tenure. When expanding the sample size, the Jaguars have had four such games in the last three seasons.
Two of those delay of game penalties came during a crucial drive in the fourth quarter. The Jaguars marched all the way down to the 1-yard line, coming very close to what would've been a decisive touchdown. Instead, Jacksonville committed both penalties during a three-play sequence that backed them up significantly. The normally cool Trevor Lawrence even spiked the ball in frustration after the second penalty.
