New York Islanders defenseman Matthew Schaefer made NHL history in Tuesday night's 4-3 shootout win over the Nashville Predators. The 19-year-old played every second of the five-minute overtime period, becoming the first player to accomplish the feat since official real-time ice-time tracking began in the 2009-10 season.

Schaefer drew a tripping penalty against Nashville forward Filip Forsberg during overtime, creating an opportunity for a short rest during the ensuing stoppage. However, New York kept its young defenseman on the ice throughout the resulting four-on-three power play. He remained in action for the final 43 seconds after the advantage expired, completing the entire overtime period without a shift change.

The Hamilton, Ontario, native also had to prevent a potential breakaway by Forsberg after leaving the penalty box. His demanding performance resulted in a career-high 32 minutes and 16 seconds of ice time, more than six minutes above the next-highest total among Islanders skaters. His workload was also the third-highest recorded by any NHL player in a game this season.

Schaefer contributed an assist in the victory, extending his point streak to five consecutive games. He now has two goals and nine assists for 11 points through 12 appearances in his second NHL season. His average ice time stands at 26 minutes and 43 seconds per game, ranking fourth across the league.

Schaefer earned the Calder Trophy unanimously last season after finishing with 23 goals and 36 assists for 59 points across all 82 games.

New York initially built a three-goal advantage through Bo Horvat, Anthony Duclair and Brayden Schenn. However, Forsberg, Alexander Kerfoot and Ryan O'Reilly scored for the Predators to force overtime. Kyle Palmieri and Horvat then converted their shootout attempts to secure the result, giving goaltender Semyon Varlamov his first win in nearly two years.

The Islanders sit fourth in the Metropolitan Division with 14 points from 12 games. They will conclude their three-game road trip versus the Minnesota Wild on Thursday night before beginning a three-game homestand against the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday.
