The Indianapolis Colts suffered an embarrassing 26-20 defeat to the previously winless Tennessee Titans in Week 6, which has led to a major move. In the aftermath of that defeat, the Colts have fired GM Chris Ballard.
However, the Colts have opted to keep head coach Shane Steichen. NFL insider Tom Pelissero confirmed that Steichen was still on the job amid Ballard's dismissal.
Steichen has been the Colts' head coach since 2023 after taking over from interim Jeff Saturday. He has yet to lead the team to the postseason. After a 9-8 debut season, he led the Colts to back-to-back 8-9 campaigns before starting this year 2-4.
In fairness to Steichen, though, the team's quarterback situation during his tenure has been rough. Anthony Richardson turned out to be a bust, and the likes of Gardner Minshew, Joe Flacco, and Daniel Jones have been mere stopgaps as opposed to long-term solutions.
The Colts were a surprising 8-2 in 2025 with Jones at the helm, but they were already falling back down to earth when he got hurt. And this season, Jones has been unable to recapture that magic, which has led to their struggles.
Article Continues BelowIt is somewhat surprising that the Colts have elected to fire their general manager and kept the head coach he hired. Ideally, their new GM would be able to hire his own man for the job. With that in mind, it remains to be seen whether Steichen will be long for Indianapolis despite staying on for now.
But it seems clear that more big moves need to be made in Indy if they are to turn their flagging franchise around.
