Following a lengthy contract standoff, the defending Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes are welcoming back a young defenseman into the fold.
The Hurricanes announced on Sunday afternoon that they had come to terms on a one-year, $3 million contract for defenseman Alexander Nikishin, who had yet to play this season.
The news was confirmed on social media by NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman, followed by a statement confirming the new pact from Hurricanes general manager Eric Tulsky.
“We’re glad that Alexander is returning to our group,” said Tulsky via NHL.com. “This has been a long process, but we look forward to him re-entering our locker room ready to contribute with the Hurricanes, as he did during a Stanley Cup championship season last year.”
Nikishin began his professional career in his native Russia in the KHL for Spartak Moscow in 2019-20 before the Hurricanes took him in the third round (69th overall pick) in the 2020 NHL Draft.

Nikishin posted 55 points in 65 games in 2022-23, then led SKA with 56 points the following season. His KHL contract was terminated in April 2025, allowing him to sign a two-year entry-level deal with Carolina.
After joining the Hurricanes, Nikishin became an NHL regular and was named to the NHL All-Rookie Team following the 2025-26 season, in which he appeared in 81 games and scored 11 goals with 22 assists. He also added an assist in 17 Stanley Cup Playoff games, helping the club win the Stanley Cup for the first time since 2006.
