Kyrie Irving’s long-awaited return delivered exactly the kind of encouragement the Dallas Mavericks needed ahead of the 2026-27 NBA season. Playing his first game in approximately 19 months after tearing his left ACL in March 2025, Irving looked sharp in Sunday’s NBA China Games preseason matchup against the Houston Rockets. He finished with 17 points in Dallas’ convincing 132-115 victory.
The veteran guard needed just 22 minutes to produce an efficient performance. He shot 6-of-13 from the field, including 2-of-6 from three-point range. He also converted all three free throws. In addition, Irving tallied two rebounds and three assists without committing a turnover.

Beyond the numbers, Irving’s composure and ability to create within the offense offered promising signs following an extended rehabilitation process. His return gives Dallas an experienced playmaker capable of organizing possessions and easing the pressure on the Mavericks’ revamped rotation. With the regular season approaching, Sunday’s performance provided an encouraging first step toward Irving reclaiming his place among the league’s most dangerous offensive guards.
Irving’s 2026 offseason centered on completing his recovery and rebuilding the strength needed to withstand NBA competition. A torn ACL and subsequent calf setback kept him out throughout the 2025-26 campaign. That forced him to focus on rehabilitation and conditioning rather than game action. By mid-summer, Irving had been cleared and was preparing to contribute under head coach Dusty May. His return also comes as Dallas continues to cultivate their young core, including Cooper Flagg and Zaccharie Risacher. Irving’s veteran leadership and shot creation could prove crucial as those pieces settle into their roles. While one preseason outing cannot erase the uncertainty surrounding a major knee injury, his efficient return offers Dallas legitimate reasons for optimism.
