With the Boston Red Sox wrapping up their season against the Chicago Cubs in the final series of the regular season, the team is looking to be the healthiest it's been. As the Red Sox prepare for the playoffs, one injury return that many would love to see is pitcher Garrett Crochet, as president of baseball operations Craig Breslow discusses a change in role, though that is familiar to the pitcher.
Speaking on MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM, Breslow would hold out the opportunity that Crochet can return to the mound, but in a bullpen role, saying that ramping him up for a start would “time out” the pitcher and team.
“We want to keep on the table the possibility that he's able to impact our club in the postseason. You know, that could be the wild card round; it could be further down the line if we're able to advance. In terms of just the volume he's going to be able to accumulate, like realistically, we're going to time out in terms of him building up enough pitches to go out and start a game,” Breslow said.
“But he's a guy that's pitched out of the bullpen, has been successful in doing that, and he can really change a game with what he can provide out of a bullpen,” Breslow continued. “He can stop a rally, get huge strikeouts, kind of neutralize the heart of an opponent's order. So we want to keep that in play for as long as we possibly can.”

Crochet has been on the 60-day injured list and hasn't played since April 25, when he first dealt with shoulder inflammation and later revealed to have a lat strain. Though being a starting pitcher for a lot of his career, he was a relief pitcher in his first three seasons with the Chicago White Sox from 2020 to 2023.
At any rate, it remains to be seen when Crochet returns to Boston as the playoffs are right around the corner.
