Giannis Antetokounmpo is happy to take a picture with young fans, but he just wants them to leave with something more valuable than a photo. At a recent Nike Freak 8 event for young players, the new Miami Heat star opened the floor for questions, only to be met with photo requests.
The Greek Freak stopped the moment to give the group a quick lesson on what they should really be asking an NBA player.
“We took a picture, bro,” Antetokounmpo said. “You got to ask for knowledge. That’s the most important thing.” He then listed the kinds of questions that could actually help a young player.

“What it took to make it to the NBA. When I get to the NBA, what I got to do? What’s the approach I got to have with my teammates, with my coach? How do you deal with 20,000 fans? How do you deal with pressure? How do you deal with the fame? How do you deal with distractions? You got to ask for the knowledge,” Antetokounmpo said.
He also pointed to on-court decision-making, encouraging the group to ask what goes through a player’s mind in the post, before taking a shot or when deciding to make the extra pass.
To drive the point home, Antetokounmpo shared a personal story about his own encounter with one of the game’s greats.
“The only picture I got is with Kobe Bryant,” Antetokounmpo said. “But when I went there, I had a notebook, and I asked him, like, 50 questions. I got that notebook right here in my house. Whenever I get confused, whenever I don’t have the answer, I go back to that notebook.”

Now entering his first season with the Heat after a blockbuster summer trade from the Milwaukee Bucks, Antetokounmpo is preparing for a new chapter. Miami opens the regular season on Oct. 21 against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
For the young players in the room, the lesson was simple. The picture is nice, but the knowledge lasts much longer.
