Kyle Whittingham made a big call in Michigan's 21-18 win over the Penn State Nittany Lions. The Wolverines coach benched starting quarterback Bryce Underwood at halftime after two interceptions and brought in Tommy Carr. That move turned out to be pretty inspired. Carr went 5-of-7 for 47 yards and added 36 rushing yards with a touchdown to lead the Wolverines to victory.
The big question now after that performance is whether Whittingham will stick with Tommy Carr as his starter over Underwood. But the Michigan coach says it's still TBD (to be determined) who will be the team's starting QB moving forward.
“It's tough, but going into the game, we had a lot of evaluation over the bye week – and Tommy got half the reps over the bye week, and he probably would have anyway,” Whittingham said per Clayton Sayfie of TheWolverine.com
“The timing of it is a fine line to walk right there. We just felt – and it really was a decision by the offensive staff, and I supported it.”
Article Continues BelowUnderwood, the consensus No. 1 prospect in last year's recruiting class, has been quite a disappointment during his sophomore season. In six games, he has completed just 58.1 percent of his passes for 924 yards with five touchdowns and six interceptions. Those are not the numbers major Michigan backer Dave Portnoy envisioned when he helped fund Underwood's recruitment.
It remains to be seen what Whittingham decides to do with his quarterback situation. But with reigning national champions Indiana coming up next to visit Ann Arbor, that decision will be very much in the spotlight.
