Georgia football looked like the clear top-ranked team in college football after taking down Alabama on the road a week ago, but life comes at you fast in this sport. On Saturday, Kirby Smart and the Bulldogs were on the wrong end of a shocking upset, as unranked Auburn took down Georgia 27-24 between the hedges in Athens.
Auburn, despite the flaws that it has shown throughout the season, played an excellent game on Saturday in all facets. However, turnovers proved to be the deciding factor that pushed the Tigers over the top. Georgia quarterback Gunner Stockton threw a pair of interceptions and gave away a back-breaking fumble in the fourth quarter that allowed Auburn to kick the game-winning field goal.
After the game, Smart talked about his quarterback and his reaction to costing his team the game against one of its bitter rivals, via Mark Schlabach of ESPN.
“I saw him in the locker room,” Smart said. “His head was up. I mean, we wouldn't have been in the position we were in if it wasn't for Gunner. I'm really proud that he's growing up and getting better. He had all the success last week, and so many people want to reach out and talk about it. It's tough.”
Stockton is usually very solid for Georgia and has been exactly that since he became the starter, so it was a bit surprising to see him be so careless with the football on Saturday. Auburn's defense has not played very well at any point this season, so that made Georgia's offensive struggles even more of the surprise.

Georgia has a bye week in Week 8. Smart and company will be back in action in Week 9 in a rivalry game against Florida where Stockton will be trying to get back on track.
