The Cleveland Guardians forced Game 5 after securing a 9-5 win in Game 4 of the ALDS over the Chicago White Sox. Gavin Williams appeared in Thursday's contest in the ninth inning to help close out the game. As it turns out, he'll be the starting pitcher on Saturday, and manager Stephen Vogt explains why.
Vogt claimed that with the Guardians in the win-or-go-home situation, the 27-year-old left-hander feels ready to lead his team to a win, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today Sports. Williams asked to be the starter, and Vogt is putting full trust in his star pitcher.
“It's a Game 5, win or go home,” Vogt said. “Gavin wants the ball. We want him to have the ball, and it's his game. And the game will tell us when it's time to move on, or maybe he takes it the whole way. We don't know. We gotta get there and find out.”
