The New York Giants had their eyes on J.J. McCarthy long before acquiring the quarterback from the Minnesota Vikings . Although New York ultimately selected Malik Nabers with the sixth overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the organization had seriously considered taking McCarthy instead . Now, the team's latest comments offer a closer look at what initially prevented that move .

In an exclusive interview with The New York Post's Steve Serby published on November 7, Giants senior vice president of player personnel Chris Mara discussed the team's initial evaluation of McCarthy and his development since arriving in New York. Mara revealed that the organization was impressed by the quarterback's physical abilities but had questions about his maturity coming out of Michigan. “We had him rated very high from a skill set,” Mara said. “We weren't quite sure about the maturity level, but we loved his skill set.”

The Giants eventually got another opportunity to bring McCarthy aboard, acquiring him from Minnesota in September 2026 for a 2027 fifth-round draft pick. His progress since joining the team has apparently changed Mara's perspective.

“Seeing him three years later, this is a completely different-looking person for me,” Mara added. He also praised J.J McCarthy's arm strength, mobility, and overall development, noting that the quarterback has become more mature both on and off the field.

McCarthy's time in Minnesota was far from smooth. After missing his rookie season with a knee injury, he struggled in 2025, recording 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

However, his recent performances in New York have given the Giants reasons for optimism. After leading the team to an overtime upset over Houston, J.J McCarthy now has another opportunity to prove himself against Philadelphia.
