Florida State was off this past week, and as they prepare to return to the field on Saturday against Clemson, Mike Norvell is still stuck on their last game. Florida State fell to Miami in double overtime after some controversial calls from the officials.

Now, Norvell is revisiting those calls after he spoke with ACC Supervisor of Football Official Gary Patterson, per Nick Kosko of On3.

“Sometimes there’s just misses, and he can teach his officials on things they see or what they think they see,” Norvell said. “Those calls can be game-changers, they can be life-changers.”

The call came with Florida State down eight in the second overtime. It was a fourth-and-21 play from the Miami 36-yard line when Ashton Daniels went deep, connecting with Macahi Danzy on what looked to be a miracle touchdown. Still, a holding call was made, and Florida State was backed up ten more yards. Daniels then looked to have potentially scored on a Hail Mary again, but even with partial possesions by the FSU receiver, the play was called an interception, and Mismi won 43-35. Florida State would have still needed to convert the two-point conversion to force another overtime, but they did not get the chance.

While life-changing call may be hyperbole, it also may be fully accuarte. Florida State is now 3-4 on the season, and there have been calls for Norvell to lose his job. With a win, FSU is 4-3, plus 2-2 in conference play. Further, Norvell has a win over one of the top teams in the nation. It changes the tone of the season, but instead, it is still a what could have been situation. If Norvell wants to save his job, wins need to come. That can start on Saturday night against Clemson.
