The first two weeks of the 2026 NFL season have already delivered plenty of twists at the running back position. Some established stars reinforcing their fantasy value. Other high-profile players enter Week 3 searching for a breakthrough. With injuries creating uncertainty in several backfields, including Denver and Philadelphia, Week 3 could be another pivotal week for fantasy football managers trying to identify which running backs are positioned for sustained production.
Week 3 Top Fantasy Football Picks
Christian McCaffrey, SF (vs. ARI)

McCaffrey did not produce his most efficient rushing performance against Miami. He gained only 23 yards on 10 carries. However, he remained heavily involved in the 49ers' offense. The rushing efficiency was modest, but fantasy managers should focus on the broader workload. McCaffrey has accumulated 29 total touches through two games. He averages 4.6 yards per carry and 7.0 yards per reception. San Francisco appears to be managing his workload somewhat carefully. Still, the veteran remains a central piece of the offense whenever he is healthy.
A matchup with Arizona provides another opportunity for the 49ers to keep him involved without necessarily needing to push his workload to extreme levels. As long as McCaffrey remains healthy, he remains an elite RB1.
Jahmyr Gibbs, DET (vs. NYJ)
Gibbs delivered another highly productive fantasy performance despite an inefficient night on the ground. He rushed 16 times for 52 yards and added 61 receiving yards and a touchdown. The rushing numbers were underwhelming, but the receiving production more than compensated. With Detroit facing the Jets in Week 3, Gibbs remains one of the safest high-ceiling options. His combination of explosive rushing ability, reception volume, and touchdown potential makes him a top-tier RB1.
James Cook III, BUF (vs. LAC)
He rushed 21 times for 135 yards and a touchdown in the Bills' 41-31 win over Detroit. He was the only Bills running back to receive an opportunity. That gives fantasy managers an extremely clear picture of his role. Buffalo's offense is capable of creating scoring opportunities. Cook appears positioned to receive the overwhelming majority of the backfield work. A matchup against the Chargers could provide another opportunity for him to deliver RB1 production.
Week 3 Fantasy Football Sleepers
Saquon Barkley, PHI (@ CHI)

Barkley's Week 2 performance was a major disappointment. However, he did miss a significant portion of the game after suffering a shoulder stinger. Barkley has now rushed for only 92 scoreless yards through two games. That makes his Week 3 matchup with Chicago particularly important. If his shoulder is healthy, Barkley remains a low-end RB1 based on talent, workload potential, and his established role in Philadelphia's offense. Fantasy managers should monitor his practice participation closely.
De'Von Achane, MIA (vs. KC)
Achane rushed 20 times for 74 yards and caught three of six targets for 19 yards in Miami's 35-13 loss to San Francisco. Through two games, Achane has yet to score and is averaging only 3.5 yards per carry. The matchup with Kansas City is not particularly favorable, so Achane should be viewed as an RB2 rather than an automatic elite play. Still, his touch volume and receiving role give him enough upside to remain in fantasy football lineups.
Cam Skattebo, NYG (vs. TEN)
Article Continues BelowSkattebo struggled during New York's 28-6 loss to the Rams. He rushed 12 times for 36 yards while adding four catches for 19 yards. Upcoming matchups against Tennessee and Arizona give him a chance to rebound. Fantasy managers should view him as a potential bounce-back RB2/FLEX option rather than overreacting to one poor outing. Continued involvement in the passing game would be particularly valuable for his PPR floor.
Injury and late-week notes
Several injuries could significantly alter the running back landscape entering Week 3.
Barkley remains under observation after his shoulder stinger forced him to miss a large portion of Philadelphia's comeback win. The Denver backfield is another situation to monitor closely. RJ Harvey was inactive in Week 2, while JK Dobbins exited early with a hamstring injury. That opened the door for Jonah Coleman to take on a larger role.
Jadarian Price also left Seattle's Week 2 win over Arizona with a shoulder injury. If Price cannot play, Emanuel Wilson would move firmly into the RB2/RB3 conversation.

Week 3 Outlook
McCaffrey, Gibbs, and Cook enter Week 3 with the workload and offensive environments necessary to remain elite fantasy options. Barkley represents the most intriguing bounce-back candidate. Achane and Skattebo remain viable plays.
The injury situations in Philadelphia, Denver, and Seattle could also create some of the week's most important waiver-wire opportunities. Fantasy managers who monitor practice participation and depth-chart changes closely could gain a significant advantage before kickoff.
