The NFL’s best catch this season came from a totally anonymous wide receiver.

Ricky O'Donnell has covered basketball at all levels for more than a decade at SB Nation. He’s currently the Associate Director of Programming.

Drake Maye has been absolutely dreadful to start the 2026 season to follow a breakout second season that almost earned him league MVP. Maye and the New England Patriots badly needed a win over Buffalo Bills in Week 4 to build some positive momentum and avoid a 1-3 start. Maye played by far his best game of the season, and he gave the Patriots a chance to win by hooking up with wide receiver Efton Chism III for a clutch fourth quarter touchdown.

With the Bills leading by five points late in the fourth quarter, Maye rolled to his right and flung the ball to the end zone. Chism seemed to be held by Buffalo’s defensive back when the ball was in the air, but that didn’t stop him from extended his free arm to make an incredible one-handed catch to take the lead. New England picked off Josh Allen on the next possession, and the Patriots earned the win they were desperate to get.

Did Chism make the best catch of the year so far? I think so given the stakes. Apologies to Keon Coleman, who also made an amazing catch in this game, but this is at least the catch of the week. Watch Chism’s grab here:

Chism was an undrafted free agent in 2025 who only had five career catches coming into this week. Chism entered the game with two catches for -1 yard on the season. A receiver with this small of a footprint making arguably the best catch of the season, and one that delivered New England a victory at that, is a truly special moment.

Maye will get the credit for leading the Patriots to a bounce-back win against an elite team, but it doesn’t happen without Chism making this ridiculous and amazing play for his QB. The NFL never ceases to surprise us.
