Electronic Arts (EA) has confirmed the development of two new projects, including Project Gridiron, an open-world American Football video game. The announcement was shared with EA Employees in an e-mail as the company plans to continue its growth and transform the sports gaming industry. But what exactly does this mean? Let's dive right in.

What is Project Gridiron? – EA's Upcoming American Football Video Game

According to Electronic Arts, Project Gridiron is one of two new projects in development. Project Gridiron has been described as a “social-first open-world experience” for the American Football team. In addition, EA is also in the pre-production phase of Fight Night, which is returning for the first time since 2011.

EA also mentioned that we'll be hearing more about these projects in the next few months. But as of right now, we don't have any more information and are left to speculate.

These new projects are part of EA's investment behind three “strategic priorities”:

  • Deepen Core
  • Expand Reach
  • Transform Business

They want to apply these strategies in more than just their sports games. Shooters, Action-Adventures, and Lifestyle games are all included in EA's strategy as they try to remain the number one publisher in the U.S.

We've already seen EA Sports begin the open-world route with EA Sports FC 27's “The Grounds” Mode. For those who've played games like NBA 2K, this area operates similarly, letting players explore a hub area full of activities.

However, EA did not mention Project Gridiron as a “mode” for Madden or its Superstar mode. Instead, it's very possible this brand new project could be a brand new game entirely.

This is interesting, especially given the recent reports that suggest the future of College Football games is “in jeopardy”, according to Insider Gaming. If true, we wonder if Project Gridiron will be an evolution of the franchise, or perhaps even replace College Football if n want to play ecessary.

But this is all just speculation. All we know for now is that EA wants to make an open-world football game with a more social experience. We don't even know if it will include any actual NFL or College Football teams, players, stadiums, etc.
