Trump accidentally roasted Sophie Cunningham’s game
Sophie Cunningham became one of the main characters of the 2026 WNBA season for all the wrong reasons. Cunningham’s comments on trans athletes to ESPN proved to be the biggest sideshow in sports, sparking national debate and protests at games all over the country despite the fact that there are fewer than 10 trans athletes competing at the college level out of 510,000. Cunningham’s fame already out-paced her game before the comments, but she rocketed into an overnight celebrity in conservative circles after making them. Her Indiana Fever team was eliminated in the first round of the WNBA Playoffs months later.
President Donald Trump brought up Cunningham unprompted at a rally on Monday night, but he didn’t exactly praise her game. In one of his signature bizarre tangents, Trump asserted that WNBA teams should only want Cunningham because she’s beautiful and could help with attendance. Does our president truly have no appreciation for 3-and-D role players? I guess not.
“Any time a politician says a woman is beautiful, that’s generally the end of his political career in the modern day politic world, but Sophie is a beautiful young woman,” Trump said. “You probably wouldn’t mind her on the team, not to help you with points, but to help you with attendance. The attendance would be good.”
Watch the clip here:
Cunningham is not a star. The Fever have a few of those players on the team, namely Caitlin Clark, Aliyah Boston, and free-agent-to-be Kelsey Mitchell. Cunningham serves a clear role as an enforcer who protects Clark on defense and spaces the floor for her on offense. She only averaged 7.9 points per game this year, but she did hit 41.9 percent of her threes.
Cunningham isn’t the All-Star conservatives want you to believe, but she’s also not a trash player like many libs assert. She’s a perfectly fine role player, and one of the biggest three-point shooting forwards in the league. Most teams would want a player like that …. as long as they aren’t causing a shitstorm off the court for absolutely no reason.
Trump loves star-power, so it’s not a big surprise that he’s minimizing Cunningham’s contributions to the Fever. It’s just gross that he’s completely reducing a professional athlete down to her looks while neglecting her contributions to the team. This is classic Trump in every way.
