It's just Week 2 of the 2026 NFL season, but Miami Dolphins fans are already looking forward to 2027. With the current construction of their roster, this team is not quite built to compete yet this year. Instead, fans are looking forward to see which of their players develop⦠and which players they can target in the 2027 NFL draft.
The prevailing consensus around the Dolphins right now is that they'll be taking a quarterback in this year's draft. With many top quarterback prospects expected to go high, Miami will have their pick in next year's draft. However⦠there's one player in particular that they need to consider: Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith.
Dolphins need to consider Jeremiah Smith in 2027 NFL Draft
Currently, there are three quarterbacks projected to go in the Top 5 of the 2027 NFL Draft. Texas' Arch Manning, Oregon's Dante Moore, and Notre Dame's CJ Carr. With many QB-needy teams projected to be picking high in next year's draft, the Dolphins are expected to quickly snatch up one of these quarterbacks when given the chance.
That being said⦠the Dolphins aren't as quarterback-hungry as teams like the New York Jets or the Arizona Cardinals. These teams already have the pieces they need to compete, and just need a franchise quarterback to lead the way. In contrast, Miami is in the early stages of a rebuild. They don't just need a quarterback: they need any help they can get.
In other words, the Dolphins are in prime position to draft the best player available. And truth be told, Jeremiah Smith is easily the best prospect in the 2027 NFL Draft.
Smith is arguably the greatest wide receiver prospect the NFL has ever seen, and that's saying something. Most wide receiver prospects have one or two weaknesses in their game that can be pointed out. Shaky hands. Mediocre route-running. Sub-par speed. Small frame.
Smith has none of these qualities. At 6'3 and 220 pounds, Smith is a physically imposing wide receiver who uses all of these tools to their fullest capacity. He's fast enough to burn opposing cornerbacks in a straight line, while also possessing the route-running abilities to get open on the cut. When the ball is thrown his way, Smith uses his robust frame to snag the ball away from opposing corners. He's a physical freak of nature who plays like he knows that no one can guard him.
He's far and away the best player in next year's NFL draft. When the only real knock on his game is his blocking prowess as a receiver, you know just how good he is. The only reason why a team wouldn't draft Smith is if they have other glaring needs, like at quarterback. The Dolphins are not in that position.
The Dolphins signed Malik Willis to a three-year deal before the start of the 2026 season. That, to us, signals that Miami is willing to take an extended look at the former Packers and Titans quarterback. Depending on how Willis plays this year, Miami might not be inclined to draft a quarterback yet. Smith is the type of player who can completely change the fortunes of a team moving forward.
