Few people in baseball know more about overcoming a 3-0 postseason deficit than Dave Roberts. Still, the Los Angeles Dodgers manager is not leaning on his own history to save his team’s season.

Los Angeles dropped a 6-2 decision to the Milwaukee Brewers in Game 3 of the National League Championship Series on Wednesday at Dodger Stadium, falling behind 3-0 in the series. Afterward, the questions turned to the 2004 Boston Red Sox, the only team in MLB history to come back from a 3-0 deficit in a best-of-seven postseason series.

Roberts was a central figure in that comeback. With Boston trailing the New York Yankees 3-0 in the American League Championship Series and down to its final three outs in Game 4, Roberts entered as a pinch-runner in the ninth inning and stole second base against Mariano Rivera. He then scored the tying run on a Bill Mueller single, and the Red Sox won that game and the next three to complete the comeback.

Despite that connection, Roberts said he does not expect to reminisce about the 2004 run with his players. Instead, he pointed to what his current group has already been through. Roberts said the Dodgers are battle-tested, have plenty of experience and understand exactly what is at stake heading into Game 4.

Los Angeles is the two-time defending World Series champion, and it swept these same Brewers in four games in the NLCS a year ago.

This time around, however, Milwaukee has had the upper hand at almost every turn. The Brewers edged the Dodgers 2-1 in Game 1, won 7-4 in Game 2 behind a bullpen that retired all 15 batters it faced, and then broke open Game 3 with back-to-back seventh-inning home runs from Jake Bauers and Garrett Mitchell.

The Dodgers’ offense has been the biggest concern. Los Angeles has scored just seven runs in the series, has yet to hit a home run, and has repeatedly come up empty with runners in scoring position.

The Dodgers have trailed 3-0 in a best-of-seven postseason series only once before, when the Baltimore Orioles swept them in the 1966 World Series. They will try to avoid the same fate in Game 4 on Thursday at Dodger Stadium.
