Shohei Ohtani continues progressing toward a possible regular-season return for the Los Angeles Dodgers after taking coach-pitch batting practice Friday.

Ohtani remains on the 15-day injured list with left-knee and right-biceps issues. He had already resumed tee work earlier in the week.

MLB.com's Sarah Wexler reported manager Dave Roberts' encouraging update on the two-way superstar's recovery as the Dodgers prepare for the postseason.

“He came out of it well,” Roberts said. “I think for me, I'm just really waiting to hear when he's going to get on the field, let alone take live BP or Trajekt. And he's not there yet. But everything I've heard, it's been a really productive last three to four to five days. He's in a good spot.”

Ohtani rejoined the Dodgers on Friday after remaining in Los Angeles for treatment during the team's seven-game road trip. He missed Thursday's NL West-clinching win vs. the Cincinnati Reds while continuing his rehabilitation.

The Dodgers star has not yet advanced to live batting practice or Trajekt work, and Roberts said he wants him to receive roughly 10 to 12 at-bats against pitching before returning to the lineup.

Los Angeles placed Ohtani on the injured list retroactive to September 8, making Wednesday the earliest possible activation date. If he returns then, the four-time MLB MVP would have no more than five regular-season games to regain his timing at the plate and rebuild game rhythm before the Dodgers begin their postseason run.

Ohtani is building back exclusively as a hitter and is not expected to pitch again this season after making his last mound appearance July 3. He hit .296 with 26 home runs and a .952 OPS through 110 games before hitting .198 with a .690 OPS and 34 strikeouts over his next 24 games.

The Dodgers have gone 6-3 without him, averaging about 5.3 runs per game. His progress remains encouraging, but the club has yet to announce a firm return date.
