The Chicago Cubs saw their season comes to an end Wednesday night when they were eliminated from the Wild Card round of the National League playoffs by the San Diego Padres. The Cubs lost the series in consecutive games after earning a spot in the postseason in the final days of the season.

While their time in the postseason was short-lived, the Cubs had multiple winning streaks in the early part of the season that allowed them to challenge the Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Central Division. However, the Cubs could not match Milwaukee's consistency throughout the year, and they finished 14 games behind the Brewers.

The Cubs will almost certainly have multiple changes to their roster when the 2027 season gets underway. The Cubs have multiple free agents, including outfielders Ian Happ and Seiya Suzuki as well as pitcher Shota Imanaga.

However, the Cubs are not likely to get involved in the bidding for the top free agent expected to be available. Tarik Skubal of the Dodgers is expected to receive the top contract offer ever made to a pitcher in MLB history.

Skubal was traded by the Detroit Tigers to the Dodgers this summer. Skubal is represented by top player agent Scott Boras, and Skubal is a two-time Cy Young Award winner.

While a number of teams may get involved in the bidding for Skubal, an insider with ties to the Cubs does not believe the team will make a significant bid for the dynamic 29-year-old left-handed pitcher.

The Cubs have already committed about $110 million to future player contracts in 2027.
