The Chicago Cubs are set to face off against the San Diego Padres on Tuesday night for Game 1 of the Wild Card matchup. Alex Bregman is expected to play after bouncing back from a scary foul tip to the face that fractured his face. However, manager Craig Counsell plans to play him in a different position.

Reports indicate that the 32-year-old will not play his usual position of third base, and will instead serve as the Cubs' designated hitter for Game 1, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today Sports. Counsell claims that playing the hot corner puts Bregman at risk of potentially further damaging his face injury.

“Alex Bregman will DH for the Cubs and not 3B tonight, with manager Craig Counsell saying his at-bats are vitally important and it's too big of a risk playing the field with 8 fractures in his face nine days ago,” Nightengale reported.

The 11-year veteran has not played third base since the injury. Chicago will rely on Pedro Martinez to play that position on Tuesday. Bregman will hit second in the order with Pete Crow-Armstrong in leadoff.
