A disappointing loss hit the Dallas Cowboys in Week 3, and the injury situation on defense didn’t get better. However, Stephen Jones remained optimistic about the defensive woes that led to the loss to the Ravens, according to a post on X by Jon Machota.
“Cowboys EVP Stephen Jones on @1053thefan: ‘We had every opportunity to win that football game. … I can assure you there's a lot of things we gotta get better at. I do keep seeing signs of improvement on the defense, obviously still a long ways to go.
“Is it disappointing as hell? Yes, it is. But we got to go back to work. We got to go back to chopping wood.’ ”
Chop, chop. And save some of the smaller logs for the secondary because it has already been roasted.
Cowboys’ defense still a work in progress
Rookie safety Caleb Downs offered his own optimistic take about the Cowboys’ defense, according to another Machota post.
“Downs on the defense’s play overall: ‘I think we did a lot of good things, but we also have a lot of things to clean up. So, that’s the way that we’re always going to look at it in terms of improvement and in terms of trying to get better. So, yeah, more to clean up.’ ”
Clean up, yes. And the Cowboys’ defense needs to provide more help for the offense. That unit put up enough points to win — even though it failed to score a touchdown at the end that would have clinched it.
Quarterback Dak Prescott took it hard, according to a post on X by SportsCenter.
“Frustrated. Frustrated as hell. Excuse me. Embarrassed,” Prescott told the media. “We call ourselves best offense, you know, GOTI, and we get down in the one-yard line and don't put it in. Yeah, it just sucks. Not a lot of words or full explanation of it.
“Defense shouldn’t have even been in that position. Those guys are over there saying, ‘It’s on us.’ Absolutely not. We’ve got to put that game away. Period.”
