The New York Liberty are heading back home in an unenviable position, facing a 0-2 deficit in the WNBA Semifinals following their 101-98 Game 2 loss to the Atlanta Dream. But the ending of the game was not without controversy. The Liberty were seemingly denied a reset timeout that could have potentially set up a better look at a game-tying basket at the end of overtime.

Following their Game 2 loss to the Dream, the Liberty reportedly made an official inquiry into the situation, and the WNBA league offices are determining what is the next step in terms of the proper protocols, as per Alexa Philippou of ESPN.

The situation in question occurred in the final seconds of the overtime period with the Liberty trailing by three points. They inbounded from the backcourt, much to the disbelief of the broadcasting crew who saw that the Liberty still had a reset timeout remaining and thus, could have advanced the ball to a much more preferable inbounding spot at mid-court.

Following the game, Liberty star Breanna Stewart admitted that the game’s officiating crew had mistakenly told the team that they did not have a reset timeout at their disposal. Despite that, the Liberty were still able to inbound the ball and get it to Stewart who got a somewhat decent look at a potential game-tying 3-point shot. It just didn’t drop.

Game 3 between the Liberty and the Dream is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 9. The Dream are looking to close out the series and advance to their first WNBA Finals appearance since 2013.
