Washington Commanders starting quarterback Jayden Daniels could return in Week 5 against the New York Giants after making progress from his elbow injury, The Ringer's Tom Pelissero reported early Saturday.

Daniels dislocated his left elbow during the first half of Washington's 37-20 Week 2 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. The injury occurred in the same elbow he dislocated last season, when it caused him to miss seven of the final eight games.

The 25-year-old quarterback returned to practice this week on a limited basis, but the Commanders ultimately ruled him out for their Week 4 matchup against the Indianapolis Colts. Daniels completed three consecutive limited sessions, giving him a potential path back for the Giants game. He could play in Week 5 if he is able to complete a full week of practice.

Daniels had already missed Washington's Week 3 game against the Seattle Seahawks, with Marcus Mariota taking over as the starter. Mariota performed well in the Commanders' 33-31 upset win, throwing for 183 yards and three touchdowns. He will remain under center while Daniels is unavailable.

Before suffering the injury, Daniels had completed 29 of 51 passes for 260 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions through two games. He also contributed 100 rushing yards on 12 carries during that span.

The recurring elbow problem remains a consideration for Daniels' return. He is expected to play through the same elbow injury he dealt with last year, although offseason surgery has not been ruled out. With Daniels having experienced elbow issues across the past two seasons, Washington is taking a cautious approach before putting him back into action.
