The Washington Commanders' 30-13 loss to the Indianapolis Colts in Week 4 was compounded by injuries, penalties and missed opportunities, leaving starting left tackle Brandon Coleman openly frustrated after the game.
Washington committed 10 penalties for 84 yards, while Indianapolis was flagged only once for five yards.
“I mean, we say the same thing every week, like, we gotta fix it,” said Coleman. “But it's just bulls**t. There's stuff that we know we gotta do and there's stuff that we gotta fix. I hate to say it, but, like, you always say that shit. Like, we gotta fix it yesterday. At the end of the day, it's on us. As an offense, as an O-line, that shit that's just simple communication that just has to go down with the (experience) that we have in our room and how gelled we are. We got to put our arms around Athan [Kaliakmanis] and make sure that we're all on the same page. It's all about us and that's what we got to get fixed.”
The penalties repeatedly hurt the Commanders. An illegal shift erased what would have been an 87-yard touchdown reception by rookie wide receiver Antonio Williams. With the extra point, the play could have tied the game at 20 in the third quarter. A false start by left guard Chris Paul also turned a third-and-12 situation into third-and-17, with rookie quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis subsequently throwing an interception.
Earlier, a personal foul by cornerback Amik Robertson came after the Colts failed to convert a third-and-14. The penalty gave Indianapolis a new set of downs, and running back Jonathan Taylor scored a touchdown three plays later.
Washington also committed four special-teams penalties and was called for a delay of game late in the fourth quarter.
Article Continues BelowThe Commanders' problems intensified after quarterback Marcus Mariota left in the first quarter. Mariota, making his second start of the season in place of injured Jayden Daniels, was injured after being sacked on third-and-goal from the Colts 5-yard line. Head coach Dan Quinn said the team would need further testing to determine the severity of the injury.
Kaliakmanis then made his regular-season debut. He completed passes for 186 yards and one touchdown while throwing one interception and posting a 60.9 passer rating. His 47-yard touchdown pass to Treylon Burks provided one of Washington's few major offensive highlights. He later connected with Dyami Brown for 48 yards.
The offensive line also faced substantial changes. Laremy Tunsil and Sam Cosmi were unavailable, while Nick Allegretti was replaced at center by Lucas Patrick. Matt Gulbin played right guard and was credited with three of the Commanders' 10 quarterback pressures allowed, including the sack that injured Mariota.
Washington entered the game without Daniels, Tunsil, Cosmi and Terry McLaurin, who missed the contest because of a hamstring injury suffered in practice. Rachaad White was also unavailable, while Charles Omenihu and Jaylin Lane left Sunday's game with injuries.
The loss followed the Commanders upset Week 3 win over the Seattle Seahawks. After dropping to 1-3, Washington will look to bounce back with Daniels expected back for its Week 5 matchup against the New York Giants.
