The Kansas City Chiefs looked like the vintage Super Bowl team from years gone by on offense in a 30-27 Week 4 win over the Las Vegas Raiders that included a gruesome injury to receiver Tyquan Thornton. A non-contact injury to Rashee Rice marred a stellar day from Chiefs offensive stars as Andy Reid made headlines with a surprising decision to bench guard/tackle Kingsley Suamataia.
Reid made the decision in a cloak of secrecy, sharing his unfiltered thoughts about it after the game.
“That is between Kingsley and I,” Reid said.
Suamataia played in the Chiefs' first three games of the season before getting on Reid's bad side as the Chiefs rolled up 399 total yards on coach Klint Kubiak's team. He was listed as uninjured and his benching was a coach's decision.
Article Continues BelowChiefs QB Patrick Mahomes drew suspicion ahead of the game as a controversial penalty called on his defender was examined closely. Mahomes had a strong day with 225 yards passing and two touchdowns while Kenneth Walker III racked up 177 yards rushing on 22 carries including two scores of his own.
The Chiefs' offense continues to roll under offensive coordinator Eric Bienemy, who has picked up right where he left off from 2022, the last time he served in his current post.
Reid's coaching decisions are usually not questioned as much as other coaches because of his championship pedigree, but Week 4's benching felt different. Reid knows his personnel as well as anyone else, giving him the benefit of the doubt as the Chiefs march forward toward a bye week followed by October 18's home game against the winless Chargers.
