As the fourth year of the Deion Sanders experiment in Colorado continues to collapse, a man with unique access to Coach Prime has made an eye-opening claim.
Christopher Neely, better known as “Uncle Neely,” has served as Deion’s personal videographer. Via Essentially Sports, Neely recently said that Sanders has offered cash to his critics in an effort to get them to leave him alone.
“For the most part, the people that attack him wouldn’t be making the money they were making if he wasn’t here to attack,” Neely said earlier this week. “Which is why he told some of them, ‘Hey man, let’s just do this. I give you $50,000 to not mention my name for a year.’ And ain’t nobody took the deal yet. . . . And you love talking about this man so much, and you make so much talking of this man that you turned the deal down.”
Sanders has yet to confirm or deny Neely’s contention. If true, it’s stunning. And it’s good to know that no one in the media has accepted the offer. It would violate any and all standards of journalism — if basic standards of journalism are still being widely practiced.
It also underscores the extreme level of sensitivity that Sanders has to criticism. Which, while not new for him, continues to be confounding.
How can so many people who have won at the game of life become so bothered by the basic scrutiny, and criticism, that comes with the territory? Nowadays, anyone and everyone with a public profile gets criticized somewhere. The only sensible approach is to ignore it. And, if for whatever reason the person being criticized is tormented by the possibility that they’re not universally beloved, the best play is to not give oxygen to the critics by acknowledging it.
First, it only invites more criticism. Second, it makes the person who should otherwise ignore the criticism seem petty, small, and focused on all the wrong things.
Which, in Sanders’s case, could help explain why the 2026 season continues to disintegrate. The only question left to answer at this point is whether he’ll get a fifth year in Boulder or a buyout.
