Clemson and Georgia have been two of the premier college football teams over the last 15 years. They were scheduled to begin a four-game series starting in 2029, but the series between Clemson and Georgia has been canceled.

Now, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney is speaking out about the fact that the series had to be canceled, according to Chapel Fowler of The State Newspaper.

“Clemson coach Dabo Swinney says he ‘hates' the fact they had to cancel their future football games with Georgia (2029-30, 2032-33), but he understands it with everyone playing nine conference games and having limited flexibility. Dabo: ‘It's college football in 2026,'” Fowler posted on X, formerly Twitter.

The ACC began transitioning to the nine-game conference schedule in 2026, with 12 of the programs playing nine conference games. In 2027, 16 of the 17 teams will play full nine-game schedules. Due to an odd number of teams in the conference, one team will play just eight games, while also facing two Power Four non-conference opponents. In 2027, that team is Clemson. They will face Notre Dame and South Carolina in the non-conference schedule, while also facing Georgia State and Wofford.

Clemson still has four non-conference games on the 2028 schedule, and they will need to cancel one. In 2029, when the Georgia series was set to begin, Clemson had games with Notre Dame, Furman, and South Carolina. They also have games scheduled with Notre Dame and South Carolina every year through 2038. With those games already o the schedule, it was necessary to drop Georgia from the schedule.

Meanwhile, Georgia will need another opponent in 2029, with just Akron and Georgia Tech on the non-conference schedule. In 2030, the Bulldogs begin a home-and-home series with Ohio State.
