Even decades after hanging up his jersey, Michael Jordan remains one of the most recognizable faces in sports. The Chicago Bulls legend has a net worth of $4.7 billion, and souvenirs from his playing career continue to command a massive value in the collectors’ market.

Recently, Pennsylvania-based auction house Hunt Auctions announced that a game-worn Jordan jersey from the 1996 NBA Finals was sold at a private auction for a staggering $14 million, which is reportedly the highest price ever paid for a piece of basketball memorabilia, per The Free Press. The red jersey in question was worn by Jordan during Game 2 of the Finals on June 5, 1998.

The auction house revealed that the jersey was bought by a Miami-based real estate investor named Ron Firman. The jersey was worn against the Utah Jazz in a 99-83 victory for the Bulls, with Jordan himself starring for his team with 37 points, five rebounds and three assists.

Chicago tied the series 1-1 with the victory and eventually won it 4-2. The championship victory meant that the Bulls completed their second hat-trick of titles, with Jordan himself winning the Finals MVP after averaging 33.5 points per game. Hunt Auctions president David Hunt revealed that memorabilia related to Jordan had escalated to an ‘elite asset class.’

“While Michael Jordan’s importance within the sports memorabilia marketplace has long been established it has now escalated to an elite asset class more typically reserved for iconic works of art,” he said. “We are very pleased to have been able to facilitate this historic sale which serves as another benchmark for our industry.”

This is the third time a Jordan jersey has sold for over $10 million. Previously, his Game 3 jersey sold for $12.3 million last month, and another Game 1 jersey commanded $10.1 million in 2022.

The $14 million price is also reportedly the second-highest for a sports jersey, with Babe Ruth’s New York Yankees jersey previously selling for $24.12 million in 2024.
