Recently, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers dropped to 1-5 on the 2026 NFL season with a crushing home loss at the hands of the Pittsburgh Steelers in overtime. The Buccaneers controlled this game for most of the way, with rookie Jalon Daniels getting another start at quarterback, but the team ultimately fell apart down the stretch en route to the loss.

Daniels has been starting in place of the injured Baker Mayfield over the last few weeks, and now, the team has gotten a new update on Mayfield's status moving forward.

“(Todd) Bowles said Wednesday will be important for evaluating Baker Mayfield and his thumb but they’ll plan as if Jalon Daniels is starting again in terms of initial game-planning,” reported Greg Auman of FOX Sports on X, formerly Twitter.

Daniels has had some moments for the Buccaneers during his limited time as the starter, most notably putting up an impressive performance in last week's road win over the Dallas Cowboys, giving Tampa Bay its first and only victory of the season in the process.

However, he has also shown the expected signs that one would anticipate from an undrafted rookie, throwing a brutal interception late in the fourth quarter on Sunday against Pittsburgh, among other mistakes.

While Tampa Bay wasn't exactly looking like a buzzsaw even when Mayfield was healthy, they'll still hope to have the veteran back in the lineup sooner rather than later.

The Buccaneers will next hit the field next Sunday for a divisional road game against the Carolina Panthers.
