Fabian Hurzeler’s side thrashed rivals Crystal Palace 5-0 this afternoon to continue their excellent start to the season, with the Seagulls currently sitting third in the Premier League. Serious questions remain about how far they can go this season and whether they could even mount an unlikely title challenge.

Brighton’s highest-ever top-flight finish is sixth, which came in 2022-23 under Roberto De Zerbi. With many big teams struggling for form and the Premier League more competitive than ever, the Seagulls have a fantastic opportunity to achieve their highest-ever finish this campaign.

The season so far

Brighton began their Premier League campaign with a 4-0 demolition of Aston Villa, scoring all four goals in the first 31 minutes. Villa were reduced to ten men shortly before half-time following a Joao Gomes red card for violent conduct. Despite the man advantage and having 83% possession, Brighton failed to score again.

Their next two games brought two blips: a 4-3 defeat to Chelsea in a thriller. Brighton were outscored, and Chelsea’s world-class front three exposed some defensive fragilities in their system. Following the defeat, they were held to a 1-1 draw by Leeds at the AMEX. Luka Vuskovic cancelled out Jayden Bogle’s opener in an end-to-end affair, with plenty of chances for both sides to win the game.

Since those two slip-ups, Brighton have been flawless in all competitions. They have won six games on the bounce while keeping five clean sheets. This run includes a 3-2 victory away at Old Trafford, coming back from two goals down to win, and, most impressively, a 3-0 dismantling of the reigning Premier League champions, Arsenal.

Last weekend, they continued to prove their credentials as challengers at the top, defeating Sunderland 2-0 at the Stadium of Light despite playing 40 minutes of the game with ten men.

They further cemented those credentials with today’s derby win. Taking a three-goal lead in the opening ten minutes, with a halfway-line screamer from Diego Gomez the pick of the goals.

The stats behind Brighton’s phenomenal start

No club in the Premier League has scored more league goals than Brighton this season. They have amassed 23 goals in their opening seven matches. League leaders Manchester City have scored four fewer, while second-placed Arsenal have scored just 11.

They’re not only firing at the top end of the pitch; they’re also well-organised and compact at the back too. They’ve conceded only five goals, four of which came in the defeat to Chelsea. This leaves them level with Arsenal for the fewest goals conceded.

Unsurprisingly, having scored the most goals in the league, Brighton rank highly in the attacking statistics. They have the most shots on target per match of any team in the league, with 6.0 per game, narrowly ahead of Chelsea in second place, with 5.6 per game.

Brighton rank second for expected goals (xG), they have 14.9, behind only Manchester City, who have 15.3 xG. This makes it clear that the Brighton players are finishing very effectively this season, having scored 23 goals from 14.9 xG. Lewis Dunk’s long-range wonder goal against Coventry and Diego Gomez’s halfway-line goal today did account for two goals from a combined 0.03 xG, contributing to the team’s xG overperformance.

With an average possession of 59.8% per game, Brighton rank third in the league. This is an increase on their 2025-26 average of 54.1%, showing that they are comfortable dictating play and controlling matches. Interestingly, they have also won both games this season in which they had less possession than their opponents. This shows tactical adaptability from Hurzeler and suggests the side can use different game plans effectively to win Premier League matches.

Standout players

Veteran Pascal Groß has been the standout star of this Brighton side. Groß spent seven seasons at Brighton before joining Borussia Dortmund in his native Germany in 2024, but he returned to the Seagulls in January this year in the hope of reigniting his chances of a call-up for the 2026 World Cup. His return to regular game time saw him make the squad for the summer.

This season Groß has shone, with four goals and four assists in all competitions. His performances earned him the Premier League Player of the Month award for September.

With four assists in the league, Groß tops that chart alongside Declan Rice and Evanilson. But it’s not just his output that is attracting attention. He covers 12.0 km per game, the fourth-highest figure in the league, and his tremendous work ethic is pivotal to Brighton’s work out of possession.

Another player who has received considerable praise in the early stages of the season is summer signing Luka Vuskovic. He joined Brighton in the summer for a reported £46 million from fellow Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur. At the age of 19, he has performed well beyond his years and has partnered the more experienced Lewis Dunk brilliantly so far.

Vuskovic is the epitome of a modern-day centre-back. He is very comfortable in possession and ranks rather highly compared with defenders from other sides near the top of the league in terms of successful passes completed and progressive passes made. On top of that, he is fantastic in the air, ranking third in the league for aerial duels won. Vuskovic is a player that Europe’s elite clubs will be keeping an eye on for the future.

How far can Brighton go?

The most realistic target for the club is a top-six finish, although fans can definitely dream of something better. With the club having to split its focus between the Premier League, UEFA Europa Conference League, EFL Cup and FA Cup this season, they will need to rely on squad players stepping up. This will be crucial in the busy period over the next few months.

If they continue their fantastic form, a top-four finish is a realistic possibility. It is a big if, as many variables, such as injuries or even the possibility of manager Fabian Hurzeler leaving to join a different club, can emerge unexpectedly. But that’s football.

Hurzeler was at one point at risk of losing his job last season, but he has emerged from that challenging spell as a far better manager. Manchester United may well be looking for a new manager soon following their worst-ever start to a Premier League season, and Fabian Hurzeler has been reported as a leading Premier League-proven option should they replace Carrick.

The picture will become far clearer in the next fortnight as Brighton travel to Anfield to face Andoni Iraola’s Liverpool, followed by two trips to the Etihad to face table-toppers Manchester City. The first visit will be in the EFL Cup, and the second in the Premier League.
