The Dallas Cowboys are 2-2 on the season after defeating the Houston Texans 34-30 in Week 4. While the club is firmly in the mix in the NFC East, the defense has struggled to begin the 2026-27 season. Although that may be the case, head coach Brian Schottenheimer isn't giving up on that side of the ball.

During a press conference with media members on Monday, the 52-year-old claims that the defense is showing signs of improvement, according to Jon Machota of The Athletic. He believes that eventually the defensive unit will play well enough that the team can rely on them if they need to.

“I think our defense is getting better,” Schottenheimer said. “I don’t want to have to score 30 points every game to win. … But if we got to score 35 or whatever it takes to win, we’ll do that, because at some point they’re gonna bail us out and we’re gonna win a game 10-7.”

The Cowboys have allowed 28 or more points in three of their four games so far this season. Each of the team's two wins so far has come when the offense puts up 34 or more points. Of course, Brian Schottenheimer is confident in his team, but the defense has allowed 112 points scored in the first four weeks, which is good for fourth most in the league right now.

However, give the organization credit for doing everything possible to fix the issues. Not only did the front office acquire talent in the offseason, but the Cowboys recently traded for Joey Porter Jr. from the Pittsburgh Steelers to improve the secondary. There are a lot of new faces on the roster, and perhaps time is all this team needs to correct itself.

Dallas will have a chance to right the ship defensively in Week 5. The Cowboys are scheduled to face off against a struggling Tampa Bay Buccaneers team for a “Thursday Night Football” matchup.
