Cornerback Joey Porter Jr. was traded to the Cowboys late on Wednesday night and went through his first practice with the team on Thursday.
Porter did not practice all summer because of what was called a back injury and had been on the injury report in Pittsburgh during the season due to that injury or conditioning needs related to his long absence. He was not on the Cowboys’ injury report for any reason, which has led to thoughts that he will be on the field for Dallas when they face the Texans on Sunday.
During a Friday appearance on 105.3 The Fan, Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer said the team is still working out whether Porter will make his debut this weekend.
“We’ll see how he moves around today, see if he’s sore today,” Schottenheimer said, via Jon Machota of TheAthletic.com. “But I thought it was a great start yesterday. Really, really pleased with not just what I saw on the field, but really just the way he attacked his preparation and in learning the system. The big thing that will drive this is his ability to communicate with Caleb Downs and some of the safeties and things like that as we get ready to finish the prep.”
Schottenheimer called the deal for Porter a sign the Cowboys are in “win-now mode” and that suggests we’ll be seeing the newest Cowboy on the field sooner rather than later.
