The Milwaukee Brewers stayed true to their market size and had a fairly low-key trade deadline. Dustin May and JoJo Romero, their two biggest additions, wobbled against the San Diego Padres in Game 3 of the National League Division Series. The former pitched only three innings, and the latter surrendered the go-ahead home run to Jake Cronenworth in the fifth. Pat Murphy now has a big decision to make for Game 4. Who is going to start?
The two-time reigning NL Manager of the Year did not provide an answer to that critical question following Tuesday's 4-3 loss in San Diego, but southpaw Robert Gasser and righty Chad Patrick are options, per Brewers reporter Sophia Minnaert.
There was a time when Kyle Harrison was guaranteed a top-three spot in Milwaukee's postseason rotation, but an abysmal summer has left him with an uncertain role for this NLDS. Conversely, Gasser's stock has significantly risen in the last month. The former Padres prospect was sent to the Brew Crew in the Josh Hader trade and has now become a key presence in the pitching staff. He allowed just five runs in his last 27 innings of work.
One could argue that Gasser has earned the right to start Game 4 in Petco Park, but if Murphy wishes to employ an opener, Patrick is a potential choice. The Arizona Diamondbacks' draft pick posted a 3.47 ERA and 93 strikeouts in 57 appearances. He was stellar in September as well, until the final game of the regular season that is. The 28-year-old surrendered four runs in 1/3 of an inning versus the St. Louis Cardinals. He has not pitched since.
Article Continues BelowThe Brewers should still inspire an abundance of confidence after the campaign they have put together, but their last three games leave plenty of room for improvement. Who Pat Murphy sends to the mound could determine if this series ends in Petco Park or is decided back in American Family Field.
First pitch is scheduled for 10 p.m. ET on Wednesday.
