The Milwaukee Brewers are heading to Los Angeles in a position they have never been in before. Milwaukee beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 7-4 in Game 2 of the National League Championship Series on Monday at American Family Field, taking a 2-0 series lead.

It marks the first time in franchise history that the Brewers have held a 2-0 lead in a best-of-seven series. They had dropped Game 2 in each of their previous NLCS trips in 2011 and 2018.

As has been the case all October, the bullpen carried the night. Dustin May, JoJo Romero, Abner Uribe and Aaron Ashby combined to retire all 15 Dodgers they faced, striking out seven without allowing a hit or a walk. Romero earned the win with a perfect sixth inning, and Ashby recorded the final five outs for the save.

Milwaukee’s relief corps now owns a 0.31 ERA this postseason, the third-lowest mark through six playoff games since 1969.

The Dodgers took the lead three separate times in the first five innings, and the Brewers answered every time. Jake Bauers drew a bases-loaded walk after a 12-pitch at-bat in the third, and Christian Yelich followed with a two-run single up the middle.

After Los Angeles scored twice in the fifth to go back in front, William Contreras launched a 436-foot solo homer to center off Kris Bubic to tie it. Contreras then delivered again in the sixth, singling home David Hamilton with the go-ahead run. Brice Turang and Bauers added RBI singles in the eighth.

The Dodgers finished with just three hits and went 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position. Yoshinobu Yamamoto lasted only 2 2/3 innings, the shortest postseason start of his career.

Game 1 followed a similar script. Milwaukee edged Los Angeles 2-1 on Sunday, with four relievers combining for 4 2/3 scoreless innings behind starter Jacob Misiorowski.

The Brewers, who led the majors with 103 wins, are chasing their first National League pennant. The two-time defending champion Dodgers, meanwhile, will try to dig out of the hole at Dodger Stadium, where Game 3 is set for Wednesday. Robert Gasser will start for Milwaukee.

Los Angeles last overcame a 2-0 series deficit in the 2020 NLCS against the Atlanta Braves.
