William Contreras has given the Milwaukee Brewers plenty to celebrate this postseason, and his teammates are not entirely sure where his latest celebration came from. After Milwaukee’s 7-4 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 2 of the National League Championship Series on Monday, Christian Yelich joined the “MLB on FOX” postgame crew of Kevin Burkhardt, Alex Rodriguez, David Ortiz and Derek Jeter on the field at American Family Field.
The crew wanted to know the story behind the bazooka celebration Contreras has been breaking out. Yelich admitted the origin was a bit of a mystery even to him.
“I’m not sure when the bazooka started getting mixed in the celebration. I think that’s been like the last month or two,” Yelich said. “He’s always done the crown thing at third base. I can’t remember when the bazooka made an appearance at first. But he loves being in those situations.”
The crew had to ask the Captain, Christian Yelich: What are the origins of the bazooka celebration from William Contreras? 😆 @kevinburkhardt | @AROD | @davidortiz | @derekjeter@MLBONFOX pic.twitter.com/QYLD77vQH2

Contreras had plenty of reasons to bring it out on Monday. The catcher went 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBI, crushing a 436-foot solo shot to center off Kris Bubic to tie the game in the fifth. He followed it up in the sixth with a first-pitch single that brought home David Hamilton with the go-ahead run.
“He’s so strong that I feel like he barely swung on that ball to hit it off the scoreboard,” Yelich said. “He’s been unbelievable for us. He’s the heart and soul of our team. Just the competitive edge and fire he brings. He’s been awesome.”
Yelich also had some fun with the go-ahead hit. “He pimped a single right there,” he said. “A bat-flip single. That was great.”
Article Continues BelowThe homer was Contreras’ third of the postseason and the fifth of his playoff career, tying the Brewers’ franchise record. Yelich chipped in as well, going 2-for-5 with a two-run single in the third inning.
The win gave Milwaukee a 2-0 series lead, the first time in franchise history the Brewers have led a best-of-seven series 2-0. Their bullpen was perfect again, with four relievers retiring all 15 Dodgers they faced.
The series shifts to Dodger Stadium for Game 3 on Wednesday, where Contreras and the Brewers will look for more reasons to fire off the bazooka.
