On Saturday afternoon, the Oklahoma football program suffered a brutal loss to the Michigan Wolverines on the road by a score of 17-10. The Sooners were playing from behind for most of the evening, and ultimately, an ugly game from quarterback John Mateer and the offense did them in.

On Sunday, things went from bad to worse with an update from head coach Brent Venables on a key member of the team's defensive unit.

“Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables said LB Kip Lewis will ‘miss some time' after sustaining a right knee injury against Michigan,” reported Pete Nakos of On3 Sports on X, formerly Twitter.

Lewis had been having a solid outing against the Wolverines prior to suffering the injury, which caused him to exit the game. It's unclear what exactly the extent of the injury is and how many games “some time” qualifies as, but it's certainly not the position the Sooners had hoped they would find themselves in two weeks into the season.

Meanwhile, most of Oklahoma's questions remain on the offensive side of the ball, where Mateer and company couldn't get much of anything going against a Wolverines squad that needed to bend the rules to defeat Western Michigan last week.

Mateer has always had question marks about his downfield accuracy and decision-making, and although an injury hampered him throughout some of last year, there is still plenty of doubt about his ability to perform against high-level competition even when healthy.

Fresh off signing an extension before the season, Venables already has his work cut out for him to keep this team above water in the playoff mix.
