Atlanta punched its postseason ticket on Friday night, beating the Astros 6-2 at Daikin Park behind a trio of home runs and a sharp outing from Tyler Mahle. The win officially clinched a playoff berth for the Braves and trimmed their magic number to claim the National League East to four over the Phillies.
Mahle set the tone. The right-hander worked six innings, allowing just three hits and one earned run while striking out six and walking one across 98 pitches. Didier Fuentes followed with two innings of two-hit, three-strikeout relief before Raisel Iglesias closed the door with a perfect ninth, striking out all three batters he faced on 11 pitches. Atlanta's staff held Houston to five hits and a .156 team average.
The offense did its damage in bursts. The Braves broke through with two runs in the fourth, added two more in the seventh and tacked on a pair in the ninth, finishing with 11 hits and five extra-base knocks. Matt Olson led the way with a 3-for-5 night that included a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored. Ronald Acuña Jr. and Michael Harris II also went deep, each driving in two, with Harris matching Olson's three-hit performance.
Article Continues BelowDrake Baldwin chipped in two hits and two runs, while Mauricio Dubon added a pair of knocks including a double. Peter Lambert took the loss for Houston, surrendering two earned runs over 5 1/3 innings despite six strikeouts, and the Astros bullpen let the game get away late.
Houston's offense never found rhythm. Isaac Paredes was the lone bright spot with a 2-for-4 night and both Astros RBIs, while Yordan Alvarez reached three times with a hit and two walks. The Astros committed the game's only error and went 2-for-6 with runners in scoring position.
The result keeps Atlanta rolling toward October with the division still very much in play. The Braves stay in Houston for two more games this weekend before returning home to host the Reds, with the Phillies chase continuing right up to the final week.
