Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Max Scherzer started the first game of a doubleheader on Wednesday, and fans are wondering if it will be Scherzer's final start of his career. The Blue Jays were eliminated from postseason contention after losing 4-2 to the Baltimore Orioles. Scherzer surrendered four earned runs across five innings of work to go along with seven strikeouts. After the game, Scherzer confirmed this likely won't be the final start of his career, but that doesn't mean he will pitch next season either.

Scherzer reportedly wants to pitch at least one more time on Sunday — which is the final game of the season. As for his MLB future past the 2026 campaign, the veteran hurler wasn't ready to reveal his plans on Wednesday.

“Max Scherzer says he’d like to pitch again on Sunday in Toronto. On his future: ‘I’ll probably say something here in the next couple of days,'” Keegan Matheson of MLB.com reports.

The 42-year-old has recorded an underwhelming 6.14 ERA across 17 starts in 2026. Although he has not had the best season, a team would likely give him an opportunity next year if he wants to continue pitching given his track record. At the very least, Scherzer could help a team's young pitchers continue to develop.

It seems as if Scherzer will make an announcement on his MLB future soon. Perhaps he may want to wait until after the season to say anything, but only time will tell.

As for the Blue Jays, they will attempt to finish the campaign strong despite no longer being in playoff contention.
