Bills’ $2.2bn cookie-cutter stadium is insult to Buffalo fans begging for Super Bowl dream

The grass has already been replaced inside the Buffalo Bills' $2.2 billion stadium.

Factor in a cookie-cutter design and preseason complaints about un-fan friendly seats, and the famous Bills Mafia deserved better than the new Highmark Stadium.

A Thursday Night Football matchup between the Detroit Lions and Bills will highlight decades of Super Bowl frustration for both fanbases.

It will also bring a spotlight to a 60,108-capacity venue that lacks aesthetic originality.

The Bills' new NFL home basically looks like an outdated spaceship from the 1980s.

But at least rookie head coach Joe Brady isn't worried about the grass already having to be replaced because there were too many divots and poor playing surface areas.

“I really don’t have many concerns with it,” rookie head coach Joe Brady told reporters.

“There wasn’t a lot of concerns with it the first go around with it in terms of there was stuff that was moving. I credit our leadership that I understand that they want to have the best surface out there and be able to make the decision and kind of go with it."

There's no doubt that the new Highmark will shake and roar once the world-famous Bills Mafia settles in for a nationally televised battle against the Lions.

The cheapest ticket on the secondary market was $437 (including fees) as of Wednesday afternoon, and the latest version of Highmark should still find a way to bring out the best in one of the NFL's loudest and proudest fanbases.

If the Bills Mafia can successfully take over Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for an NFL International game -- I watched that scene unfold in 2023 when Josh Allen threw for 359 yards in a loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars -- then Buffalo can gradually break in a new Highmark.

But small video boards, obstructive views and the lack of a Super Bowl-ready roof aren't the biggest problems.

Architecturally, the Bills have a new $2.2bn venue that completely misses the mark.

Horrible MetLife Stadium looks cooler than Highmark, despite being stuck in New Jersey and shared by two NFL teams (New York Giants and Jets).

The new home of the Bills also can't touch Tottenham's state-of-the-art cool factor, which allows the venue to easily bounce between Premier League matches and NFL games.

And while several NFL teams are proposing new stadiums that intelligently blend the old school with the new world, Highmark already looks boring before the first official kickoff.

SoFi Stadium (Los Angeles Rams and Chargers), Allegiant Stadium (Las Vegas Radiers), Mercedes-Benz Stadium (Atlanta Falcons), US Bank Stadium (Minnesota Vikings) and Levi's Stadium (San Francisco 49ers) are all cooler looking than Highmark, while potential new stadiums for the Kansas City Chiefs, Cleveland Browns and Tennessee Titans easily win design battles.

The Bills should have blended traditional with bold -- or simply emphasized the old school while ensuring that the new Highmark was completely state of the art once you walked inside.

Not another boring sports spaceship that has no place sitting in the middle of Buffalo.
