The Cincinnati Bengals on Saturday elevated quarterback Josh Johnson and linebacker Joe Giles-Harris from the practice squad to the active roster ahead of Sunday's Week 2 matchup against the Houston Texans. Both players received standard elevations for the game.

Johnson's promotion comes as starting QB Joe Burrow deals with a back issue. Burrow was limited in practice earlier in the week and is listed as questionable for the Houston game. However, Bengals head coach Zac Taylor said Burrow participated fully in practice on Friday and “feels good.”

If Burrow is unable to play, Johnson is positioned to provide additional quarterback depth behind Joe Flacco. Flacco is expected to serve as Burrow's backup versus the Texans, with Johnson potentially filling the next spot on the depth chart. If Burrow is available, Johnson could instead be inactive for the game.

Johnson, 40, signed with Cincinnati in March after proving himself as a veteran quarterback who has played for 13 different NFL organizations. He spent the 2013 season with the Bengals and also attended the team's training camp in 2015.

Cincinnati signed Johnson to its practice squad on Sept. 1 after he stood out during the preseason. Last season, he appeared in five games for the Washington Commanders.

Johnson and Giles-Harris will automatically return to the Bengals' practice squad on Monday because their elevations are limited to Sunday's game.
