MIAMI – With Giannis Antetokounmpo making his Miami Heat debut in the regular season on Wednesday night, it ended in disappointment in a 131-106 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves inside the Kaseya Center. While the overreactions around the Heat are sure to surround the team after the opening loss, captain Bam Adebayo would lay the groundwork for what needs to be corrected.
Despite Antetokounmpo's 35 points and six rebounds, Minnesota controlled most of the game and overwhelmed Miami's defense with their offense, led by star Anthony Edwards and his 45 points. Arguably the more disappointing aspect from the first regular-season game was the defensive effort, as the Timberwolves made 21 out of their 50 attempted three-point shots, collected 17 offensive rebounds, and scored 20 second-chance points.
Speaking after the loss, Adebayo said that this can't be a “habit” when it comes to the lack of extra defensive effort.
“It's game one, but we don't want to make this a habit,” Adebayo said Wednesday night after recording 15 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and three steals. “And for us tomorrow, you know how Spo [head coach Erik Spoelstra] is, we're about to watch three hours of film, and it would probably be all defense.”
Adebayo would say to ClutchPoints after the loss that rebounding and allowing second-chance points are two “big muscle areas” that have to be cleaned up.

Heat's Bam Adebayo on getting newcomers on the same page
Adebayo is tasked as the captain and connective glue on the Heat to acclimate the newcomers such as Antetokounmpo, Klay Thompson, and others. However, Adebayo has seen it as an easier task since the new faces are veterans and some have been in “championship locker rooms,” as Antetokounmpo won one title with the Milwaukee Bucks and Thompson has four with the Golden State Warriors.
